Villajoyosa Travel Guide

The picturesque town of Villajoyosa is located on the Costa Blanca, just a short drive away from the airport, a bit further down the road from the centre of Benidorm. Aptly known as "the jewel city", due to its colourful houses, this small, but vibrant town also is the home to many historic monuments and great architecture. Also offering a Blue Flag award-winning beach, the peaceful surroundings attract people who want a quieter, less buzzing atmosphere than the bright lights of Benidorm, but with easy access to city if you wish.

Beaches:
The area has 3.5 kilometres of beaches, of note amongst these is the Centro beach, where the famous Moorish landing is celebrated and El Paradís beach. These are the best beaches, though there are other beaches such as the Xarco beach with a watchtower and the Torres beach with an attractive Roman/funereal Hercules tower.

Events:
One of the most unique festivals takes place every year, for over 200 years, on the morning of 28th July, celebrating the disembarkation of the Moors.

Museums:
Sweet tooths will definately not want to miss the Museo de Chocolate (chocolate museum). A typical 19th century rural house exhibiting the various tools, objects and charting the history of chocolate production. Founded in 1881, Chocolates Valor have been a household name in chocolate in Spain for many years.

Worth a visit:
The Roman Monument of l'Almiserá can be found in the gardens of Centre Social Llar del Pensionista, centre of the cultural and social activity of the town. In its surrounding area there is a luminous panel of the Rutas Culturales Guiadas (guided cultural routes) with information about the monument and about the Casa de la Barbera.

Gastronomy:
In Villajoyosa, apart from the deeply rooted chocolate industries, there is a peculiar handmade sweet: "el turrón a la piedra" (nougat). The creaminess and hint of lemon makes it irresistible. Also the handmade ice-creams are not only nutritious but the perfect antidote for the hot Spanish sun.
