Once a Roman settlement and now developed into a cosmopolitan town, Vilamoura is centred around its famously colourful marina where sailing yachts and fishing boats can be hired. The resort centre boasts a huge variety of shops, boutiques, live music bars and restaurants as well as a casino.

In Roman times this location was important in producing a fish paste known as "garum". The ruins also include the baths in which the mariners used to bathe.
