Tavira is the cultural capital of the Algarve, situated only 30kms from the Spanish border, close to the sea and blessed with an idyllic island where only the sound of the breaking waves interrupts the silence.
A minute of History: Tavira along with Lagos is one of the most architecturally attractive towns in the Algarve and its origin dates back to around 2.000 BC. During the occupation of the Algarve by the Moors this town was considered of great importance due to its fishing industry.

From the churches of the ancient centre, where preservation has been in constant harmony with the surroundings, it allows the visitor to encounter other areas of interest apart from the usual offer of sun and beaches.
Where to go: If you are browsing along the Travessa de Dona Brites, you will see beautiful medieval houses, with Gothic windows and portals. In the suburbs, in the village of Luz there is a Renaissance church, which has been a pilgrimage place for many centuries.

Alternative Activities: Near to Tavira are located the towns of Cabanas and Pedras del Rey, both small beachfront villages catering specifically for the tourist. In the small village of Luz de Tavira there is one of the finest examples of Manueline craftsmanship around the southern door of the Parish Church.
