Salamanca is an upmarket area to the north-east of the city centre, an elegant grid of avenues lined with expensive apartments. Explore a little bit and you'll find many interesting buildings and boutiques. If you're feeling flush take a stroll down Calle Serrano, where many of the international designers have their stores in Madrid. Oozing wealth, many clubs and bars in this area have dress codes.
Location: Just to the north-east of the city centre, you'll find excellent public transport including buses and several metro stations.
Famous Monuments: Two modern sculptures can be found in Salamanca, celebrating the discovery of America. You see Joaquín Vaquero Turcios' chunky cement blocks decorated with inscriptions by philosophers and indigenous leaders on the Calle Serrano side, whilst on the other side you can see a traditional sculpture fo colombus himself. The arts centre, Centro Cultural de la Villa, is hidden beneath the noisy cascading waterfall.
Nightlife: Garamond on calle Claudio Coello, 10 is the spot for celebrity gazing (and a fair few wannabees also!), playing a good range of house and pop music. Dress to impress as the door policy is quite exclusive.
El Viso has three floors full of Madrid's well-to-do, and plays fairly standard pop and house music. Downstairs you will hear mainly typical disco stuff, while upstairs it is more relaxed and easy-going. It has been an upmarket venue for many years and that is how they like to keep it, so the door policy is very strict. Dress up smart (jeans and trainers are a strict no-no).
Gastronomy: Tse Yang is an authentic Chinese restaurant located in the luxurious Villamagna Hotel. Excellent quality and you will find many dishes not available in your usual middle-of-the-road Chinese eatery. Booking in advance is recommended as despite the high prices it is very popular. Paseo de la Castellana, 22.
Taberna de Daniela is a busy tavern which is very popular with the locals. Often crowded but worth it for the pastries, cheeses and meats available. General Pardiñas, 21.
For tastes a little further afield, try Centro Cubano, Try the traditional ropa vieja (shredded beef) with black beans, the picadillo criollo (Creole mincemeat), fried banana and the fresh guava desserts for an authentic Cuban experience. Live music is played at the weekends and the atmosphere is amplified by the sensual music, photos, posters and friendly service. Claudio Coello, 41.
