The face of the town reflects its varying fortunes during the eight centuries of its existence. Rapidly developing into a trading centre for North German merchants and craftsmen, Rostock was soon the largest and most important city in Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania.

Location:
A city of northeast Germany near the Baltic Sea north-northwest of Berlin.

Attractions:
ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS: Housing some 2,000 animals from all parts of the globe, the zoo has specialized on northern and aquatic animals. It has earned a good reputation for its breeding programme for polar bears, its seal basins, seabird aviary and its "pet zoo".

Places to visit:
Alter Strom: One of the oldest streets beside a former shipping channel lined by traditional fishermen's houses on one side and a fishing quay on the other. Westmole: The mole is 500 metres long and extends frorm the foot of the lighthouse built in 1897/98. Seepromenade: Bordered by hotels, boarding houses and the Kurhaus (a building in Bauhaus style), the promenade skirts the broad, white, sandy beach.

Famous Monuments:
Town hall: Built around 1250, this is the oldest profain building in the city. Its main features are the Baroque front annex and the Gothic facade wall with its seven pinnacies. Marienkirche: Built around 1398 as a cross-shaped basilica with lateral and longitudinal aisles of identical areas, the church is richly endowed with treasures acquired in the course of centuries, including an astronomical ciock built in 1472.

Museums:
Kulturhistorisches Museum in the former Kloster zum Heiligen Kreuz (Convent of the Holy Cross): major collections of 16th to 19th Century Dutch paintings and artifacts relating to local history in Krbpeliner Tor gate.
