Placa Catalunya really is the heart of Barcelona. This busy square is home to some of the biggest stores in the city, and is a hub for transportation (buses, trains, taxis and the tourist Bus). Very close to Las Ramblas and rivals London's Trafalgar Square for the pidgeon count! You can't really get more central than this area and many tourist attractions are within walking distance or a shorty metro ride-away. Many of the major shops and the famous Spanish department store El Corte Inglés is nearby.
Location: Located right in the city-centre, Plaça Cataluyna is a major hub for transport, with metro and buses running frequently. Despite the central location there are many attractive fountains and green areas closeby when you want to sit back and admire this beautiful city.
Where to go: The Bar Zurich in Plaça Catalunya is the most popular bar in town. It's always full of locals and tourists in the busy Plaça Catalunya area. Despite the relatively new El Triangle Mall being built nearby, some of this well-established café's romantic charms still remain.
Art and Culture: Visit the Barcelona City Hall which puts on many high quality shows, musicals and cabarets, the food is always superb and its a great atmosphere. Shows start at 21:00.
Museums: The museu d'Art Comtemporani (Museum of Contemporary Art) is the 11th most popular tourist attraction in Barcelona and displays work from the second half of the 29th century, inculding many famous painters. The exhibitions change regularly so its a good idea to check the official website for the latest news: www.macba.es
Gastronomy: Certainly not stingy with portions, La Tramoia has a great choice of tapas and mediterranean dishes, plus a great wine list all at reasonable prices. Popular with locals which is a good indicator of quality.
For the discerning vegetarian there is the quirkily named Unicornius. 100 % natural, vegetarian cuisine in a classical environment; they even serve biological, non-alchohol beer.
Another restaurant with an interesting name is the Vaca Paca which is always very busy, and understandably so as it serves one of the best buffets in Barcelona, all for very reasonable, all-inclusive prices!
The Hard Rock Café, part of the renowned chain, is located in Plaça Catalunya, and serves above average American style cuisine amongst some interesting music memorabilia.
