With neighbouring Grau Roig, Pas de la Casa is Andorra's highest, most convenient and certainly most sophisticated resort. The centre comprises a tight, twisting network of interlinked streets, steep in places and packed full of duty-free shops and informal eateries. It is the only entrance into the principality from France and consequently becomes very busy, especially at weekends.
Location: In the extreme E of the principality, just across the border from France. 18 mls NE of Andorra la Vella. 112 mls S of Toulouse airport (France), 167 mls N of Barcelona airport (Spain).Perched high on a mountain pass, hugging the foot of slopes on 3 sides.
Getting Around: A limited bus service operates around town, although there is no real need for it ? all accommodation is fairly convenient for the slopes. Service to Andorra la Vella 4 times daily.
Entertainment: Daytime: slalom stadium; snowboarding (snow park with half-pipe at Grau Roig); children's snow playground.
Nightlife: mix of unsophisticated discos, handful of good restaurants and many small bars for lively apres-ski.
Shopping: Very high concentration of demanding, affluent French visitors has helped create a broad spectrum of quality tax-free goods; undoubtedly the best choice outside the capital, although marginally more expensive.
Sports: Ample altitude and many N-facing slopes ensure a long skiing season from Dec to May. Best bet when conditions are poor elsewhere in Andorra. Over 50 ski-runs in Pas de la Casa/Grau Roig area, comprising 8 green runs, 9 blue, 21 red and 11 black. Around 17 mls of piste with artificial-snow facility.
4 fast chair-lift stations are situated only a short distance from the centre and are supplemented by another chair-lift 600 yds away. There are direct links over to nearby Grau Roig from the village lifts, opening up the Pas/Grau Roig ski-area with over 30 lifts in total.
Gastronomy: Wide choice of good-quality cuisine with a strong French influence. A few fast-food places, including the odd pizzeria.
Comments: A serious skier's resort for all standards; extremely popular with French weekenders who triple the village's population on a Friday night. A little more upmarket and expensive than other Andorran resorts.
