Montjuic is simply one of the most visually stunning areas of Barcelona, rich in history and culture. The name literally means "Jewish mountain" and Montjuic is located just to the south of the city centre. The location gives breathtaking views of Barcelona and is a great place for walking, relaxing and soaking up the local sights. There are some great picnic spots and an interesting site for art lovers.
Location: Excellent public transport links including tram, cable car and metro. Nearest metro station is Plaça España. Much of the landscape is covered with ornamental gardens, and is relatively peaceful compared with the frenetic city centre.
Shopping: Music lovers should venture into the annual record collector's fair, full of golden oldies and all the latest tunes from a whole variety of genres. Occasionally there are auctions for music memorabilia. Held at Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina, 1. Takes place between 10 - 12 November and is one of Europes largest music fairs. Go there early to grab the best bargains.
Attractions: The stunning Palau Nacional makes a beautiful backdrop to Placa Espanya and is also known as MNAC, a museum which has the largest collection of Catalan art in the world.
The Magic Fountain is one of the few tourist sights you can see for free..and what a sight! Many tourists and local crowd around to watch the spectacular lights and music and of course the huge fountain itself shooting into the night sky.
Art and Culture: Created by Joan Miró as an institute for the study of contemporary art, the Fundacio Joan Miró was built by his close friend and architect Josep Lluís Sert. It comprises an auditorium, and art exhibitions in all mediums: Tapestries, engravings, photographs, and also there are several temporary exhibitions held throughout the year. Admission is currently 7 euros, students and over-65's 4 euros and under-14's enter free.
Sports: When the summer heat becomes too much, make use of the Olympic swimming pools which are located here. In summer they even have films projected onto the surrounding walls so you can watch a movie whilst you swim!
Worth a visit....: Poble Espanyol was created to illustrate some important Spanish architecture and the different styles used in the different autonomous areas of Spain. It houses craft shops, work shops such as glass-blowing that you can watch, and many varied restaurants and cafes.
