A modern-looking city which has absorbed the town of Marghera and, in so doing, has become the port and the hub of the industrial development of Venice.
A minute of History: At one time the site of a castle belonging to the city of Treviso, Mestre in the 18th c. became the place where patrician villas with magnificent parks were sited. From the 1920s onwards, the appearance of Mestre has been transformed by the rise of new districts: people from Venice who were leaving the lagoon area in order to work in industry nearby have moved in here, and Mestre has grown into a large-scale city.
