The city of Malaga is by its characteristics of city Mediterranean Andalusian and, and mainly by their climatology, a tourist destiny of great animation. In the first hours of the day the animation of commercial, tourist and administrative character is concentrated basically in the Historical Center, Av. Andalusia and Malagueta. The tourist itineraries are distributed by the surroundings of the Cathedral, Fortress and Museums, between the streets Larios, Granada, San Agustín, Seat of the Favor and the gardens of the Stroll of the Park, the Conception and the Retirement.

A minute of History:
The Moors occupied the city until the mid fifteenth century, after which it grew to become one of the foremost merchant centres in the entire Iberian Peninsula. This illustrious past has left its imprint on the historic centre, particularly around La Alcazaba, a fortress which dates back to 1065 and is now a fascinating archaeological museum.

Where to go:
Part of the city's attraction is that of its intriguing layout which makes it particularly appealing for exploring. There are endless narrow streets, historic buildings and quaint old-fashioned shops which have remained largely unchanged despite the passage of time. This means that Malaga literally has something for everyone; a unique appeal which for one person may derive from the vitality and hospitality of the people, another from the architecture and, still another from the overall ambience and graciousness of the city.

Art and Culture:
Spain's celebrated painter, Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in the corner house of an elegant yellow-toned block on Plaza de la Merced. His birthplace was declared an historic-artistic monument in 1983 and in 1991 it became the headquarters of the Picasso Foundation. The centre has been created to foster cultural activities including the promotion of contemporary art with a special emphasis on Picasso himself.

Activities:
Major sights in the centre include the cathedral and several churches, each with its own distinctive style. There are also some excellent museums. These are all located within a small area, the highlight being the Alcazaba and the Castillo de Gibralfaro with their fantastic views of the town and bay. Spain's celebrated painter, Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in the corner house of an elegant yellow-toned block on Plaza de la Merced. In the centre of the city is the beautiful Alameda Gardens, and just outside on the way to Antequera one finds the extensive Jardines de la Concepcion.

Gastronomy:
As well as being a cultural centre, Malaga is also a great place to eat out. The Malagueños love their food and the bars and restaurants here are where the real social life takes place. The choice in unlimited and, on the whole, reasonable with some bars offering a menu of the day with bread and wine for as little as 6€. Tapas, small portions of many different dishes is an Andalusian tradition and a wonderfully inexpensive way to try a variety of local food.
