A pretty resort situated on the west coast of Tenerife. It is a stylish area with a relaxed atmosphere. Though the restaurants are excellant and plentyfull, and the marina is ever popular. It is the stunning scenery that Los Gigantes is famous for. The resort lies at the foot of a massive range of cliffs, which rise to a height of nearly 1000m and plunge almost vertically into the ocean.
Location: The resort of Los Gigantes is a world apart from its neighbour of Playa de las Americas 20 miles down the coast. Its name derives from the imposing cliffs, "The Giants" which dominate the resort.
Transfer time from the main airport varies, but is generally around 45 minutes to 1 hour.
General Information: Overall it's a pretty resort and great care has been taken over its design and construction. With the exception of the one multi-storey hotel, all of the resort's apartments and residential areas are low-rise and blend in well with the surroundings. It is a small, tranquil place and has an air of exclusivity about it.
Where to go: The Octopus waterpark and dolphinarium is situated in the Costa Adeje area of Playa de la Americas. The park is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 and features all the expected slides including "kamakaze", "foam", and slower lazy river type slides. If you only visit one place during your visit, make it Parque Las Aguilas. Set high in the hills behind the resort of Los Cristianos in 75,000 sq. metres of tropical gardens you will need a full day to see all the attractions. The park has a number of demonstrations and shows running throughout the day, including parrot shows, penguin feeding time and a free flying eagle demonstration.
Beaches: Lying at the foot of the cliffs there is a small, clean black sand beach which is rarely crowded, despite being suitable for children. Next to the public beach is the marina, where you can find numerous private boats and yachts moored next to the boats which take visitors out to see the dolphin and whale colonies which live between the west coast of Tenerife and the neighbouring island of La Gomera.
Resort Suitability: It is important to note that Los Gigantes may not be suitable if you, or someone in your party is very elderly, infirm or in a wheelchair. This is because the entire resort is extremely steep, and the roads through the town fall sharply from the connecting main road above the town, down for a mile or so to the lowest point at the boating marina. There is very little in the way of 'level ground' here.
Attractions: Camel Park; perhaps not so suitable for the infirm or those that easily suffer from sea sickness. The ride lasts for about 1 hour around the fields that surround the farm. The camel park has a small cafe selling the usual range of snacks and drinks. Loro Parque; is Tenerife's most popular wildlife centre and receives more than 1.3 million visitors each year. Situated at outskirts of the northern resort of Puerto da la Cruz it is home to the largest parrot collection in the world and the biggest dolphinarium in Europe.
Facilities: The town's commercial centre is just inland from the marina. Although small, you will find a variety of bars and restaurants, plus shopping for everything from fruit and veg to designer label clothes. In the central square there is a pedestrian zone based around the old church. This also where the majority of events in the towns carnival take place.
