Las Ramblas is the most famous street in Barcelona, and is reportedly the very centre of the city. 1.2 kilometres long with Port Vell (near the cruise port terminal) at the southern most end and Plaça Catalunya at the northern most end, the street is bursting with life and energy. A hub for socialising and sightseeing, Las Ramblas is definately not a place to miss during your stay.
Location: Las Ramblas is mainly pedestrianised, with only two narrow one-way roads running either side. The Ramblas is serviced by three Metro stops along its length making it a superb transport point to see the rest of the city.
Local Market: The Mercat de la Boqueria is a large and colourful market on the Ramblas. Open all year round but particularly colourful during the summer months, you'll be dazzled by the brilliance of colour from the fruits and vegetables in its stalls.
Attractions: About half down Las Ramblas is the famed Gran Teatre del Liceu (Liceu Theatre), which opened on April 4th, 1847 as the largest Opera house in Europe. It remains one of the biggest opera houses in the world, seating 2,300. It hosts a varied programme of opera, dance and concerts. The lavish interior is in the classic European style, and joy to behold.
Facts for Travellers: Visitors are advised to keep an eye on their belongings as pick-pocketing has increased in this area.
Famous Monuments: At the port end of Las Ramblas stands the Monument a Colom (Columbus Monument). From the top you can get fabulous views of the city as the monument is about 80 metres high.
Nightlife: Tucked away in a small street right off the bottom of Las Ramblas, Before is a stylish bar-restaurant with a great atmosphere. It offers Mediterranean cuisine to the backdrop of chilled-out music in an open space perfect for group bookings.
After dinner the feeling gets more upbeat with DJ's playing club tunes.
The best Guinness in town is the Temple Bar, just two steps from Las Ramblas. Similar to the Temple Bar in Dublin, you'll find all your favourite beers, major sports on TV and live music.
Gastronomy: The La Bodegueta is a tiny restaurant at the famous Las Ramblas in Barcelona, but in the northern part of the street. The restaurant offers delicious cold tapas and wines; the atmosphere is personal and cosy and slightly off the tourist trail.
Miranda restaurant is elegance epitomised; the entrance of this restaurant with its huge plants, dimmed lights and sculptures is more than inviting: eating in the Miranda is very atmospheric. The menu is exclusive with international and national dishes.
