Larnaca is the international gateway to Cyprus, being its second port and having an international airport. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and has plenty of historical sightseeing on offer to complement its deep-blue sea, bright sandy beaches and reliably sunny skies.

General Information:
With a population of just 62.000 Larnaca retains a relaxed, leisurely atmosphere. One of the town's most distinctive features is the mid-town seaside promenade lined with tall palm trees. Palm trees and minarets which dot the horizon also give Larnaca a Middle Eastern feel, particularly in the old, inner city.

Beaches:
Larnaca has a sandy beach which is lined with palm trees.Makenzy Beach is just south of larnaca, a resort area providing excellent safe bathing, modern spacious restaurants, beach facing terraces, gardens, lawns and car parking.

Attractions:
Places of interest: Larnaca Fort and Marina; Archaeological Museum; Peirides Museum; Kamares; Hala Sultan Tekke.

Events:
Fifty days after Easter, Larnaca bursts into activity as it celebrates KatakLysmos, a festival unique to the island. Some say the ceremony, in which people flock to the sea and sprinkle each other with water, is in memory of Noah's salvation from the Flood. Others say it is a thinly disguised pagan festival, perhaps to celebrate Aphrodite's birth or the resurrection of her lover Adonis. Whatever its roots, Kataklysmos is an event which provides for five days of spirited festivities.

Nature:
The near-by salt lake is a favorite stop-over spot for thousands of imigrant birds in winter, whilst on on its edge in a tranquil setting stands a popular Muslim pilgrimage place.

Places to visit:
Larnaca has three notable museums containing mediaeval and archaeological artefacts. Not far outside the town to the south west can be seen the old aqueduct, The Kamares. Built in 1745 of Roman style, it carried water to Larnaca from a source 6 miles to the south. Larnaca Fort. A fortress built in 1625, it houses a museum of mediaeval articles and a summer cultural centre. SALT LAKES : Between the town and the airport to the south are the salt lakes which are filled with water during the winter months when they are inhabited by hundreds of beautiful flamingos.
