La Latina is one of the more established areas of Madrid with a long history. Brimming with traditional bars and restauarants, its a great place to wander around and see a glimpse of traditional Madrid. It is home to one of Madrid's most famous markets, El Rastro where you are sure to find an interesting bargain.
Location: Very close to the city centre, just to the south of Puerta del Sol. La Latina is the closest metro station.
Entertainment: Cafe en Vivo is an atmospheric live jazz venue with a bohemian air about it, with live music on Fridays and Saturdays at 23:30 and after midnight. The interior is elegant, with old ornaments, sculptures and marble tables. It's a great place to spend some time with friends and there's no cover charge for concerts. Torrecilla del Leal, 18.
Local Market: El Rastro is a gigantic flea market that takes place between the ambajadores streets. The enormous garage sale offers a hodge podge of goods; a mixture of clothing, DVD's, magazines, hardware, many picture frames, jewellery... almost everything imagineable. A great place for a browse, just keep an eye on your belongings.
Nightlife: Dekonya is a lively club, where the place fills up with performers, artists and their entourage. The interior is brightly painted but the lighting is subdued and there are mirrors and curtains everywhere. The club plays host to cabaret shows, aswell as soul and pop concerts and tango displays.
Gastronomy: Emma y Julia is an unpretentious pizzeria in the heart of the city, in traditional Italian style serving tasty pizzas, pastas and salads. Good wine list too. Cava Baja, 19.
Taberna La Percha is a traditional taverna which serves tapas and also has a formal dining room serving simple and delicious Spanish home-made dishes. Toledo, 28.
