Huertas is a great area for live music, cafés and bars and attracts mainly 20 and 30 somethings. Just to the south of Puerta del Sol, this is a convenient, central area.
Shopping: Huertas is an interesting area for smaller, boutique type shops, especially book shops where you can browse for hours. Worth exploring for that one-off item.
Places to visit: Plaza Santa Ana is a buzzing hotspot for locals and tourists and close to Puerta del Sol. The neoclassical Teatro Español building and the art deco Hotel Victoria (a favourite with bullfighters) are both here and Villarosa (which featured in Pedro Almodóvar's movie High Heels), once a flamenco dance hall, it's now a trendy bar.
Worth a visit....: This area is home to the grande Spanish Parliament, and vistors are allowed on Saturdays between 10:30 and 12:30 (ID required).
Nightlife: Viva Madrid is an unapologetic authentic Madrid bar, which plays a great mix of flamenco and pop music. On hot summer nights, it's worth taking one of the sidewalk tables so you can check out the talent moving from one bar to the next. If you're here during the day you'll be served tasty tapas and raciones (larger helpings) with your drinks.
Talented jazz and blues musicians of all ages perform on the tiny stage at Populart, and prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the performers.
Los Gabrieles has a history of attracting international and Spanish celebrities. Flamenco shows start at 22:00 and the music is an up-to-date mix of Flamenco, funk and salsa.
Gastronomy: Viva Madrid and Los Gabrieles are popular bars decorated with beautiful tiles and serving great cocktails and sangría, or why not try the traditional Cervecería Alemana for crowds, beer and tapas.
Cluny serves an interesting mix of Mediterranean and Asian cuisine with a French influence, and the home made desserts are unbeatable.
Try Casa Patas for great flamenco accompanied by tasty homemade Spanish cuisine, making it a really enjoyable night out. Calle Cañizares, 10.
