This central area is as the name suggests home to Prague Castle which is the largest collection of wonders in the city, displaying architecture from many different time periods. An excellent choice of area for those who wish to be close to many tourist areas and attractions; Charles Bridge and the Old Town are only a short walk away.
Where to go:
Prague Castle dates back to the 9th century and was used by Czech Kings and subsequently presidents. The St. George Basilica is simply serene and you will be in awe of the Gothic architecture of St. Vitus Cathedral. Enjoy some of the most stunning views of Prague from the Strahov Monastery, and from there take a stroll to the main entrance. Certainly a very popular tourist attraction which will immerse visitors in the grand history of Prague.
Getting Around:
This area's closest metro station is Hradčany on line A and takes about 5-10 minutes to reach the heart of the city.
Places to visit:
Golden Lane is a small street lined by 11 historic houses, some of which now house interesting armoury and textile exhibits, along with souvenir shops. A very popular part of Prague Castle, it attracts a fair amount of visitors who cram into the narrow passageways. Its moniker comes from the fact as the area was originally known as Zlatnicka Ulicka (Goldsmith's Lane).
Combined tickets for the entire Prague Castle complex include entrance to Golden Lane. Otherwise, buy a single entry ticket.
Inside the castle complex is the imposing, gothic St. Vitus Cathedral which dominates Pragues skyline and is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks.
