The village of Es Mercadal is situated in the centre of the island of Menorca and at the crossroads of the main roads running from east to west and north to south. Es Mercadal is located at the foot of “Toro” (358m), the highest point of Menorca, where you will find the Church of the Virgin del Toro (bull), the patron saint of the island and spiritual centre of the people from Menorca.
Es Mercadal is surrounded by large rural estates.

Thanks to its traditions and geographical situation in the centre of Menorca, Es Mercadal is an ideal locations hold exhibitions, fairs, concerts etc.
Handcrafts:
Also in the village there is a small family business that makes “d’avarques” (typical Menorcan sandals) that were worn many years ago by the people who worked the land and, nowadays, are extremely popular with the local people and tourists for their comfort and design.
Places to visit:
Es Mercadal is made up of traditional white houses and quiet streets. Special mention should also be made of the small river, which runs through the village and under its many bridges. A visit to the church of St. Marti, a renaissance building, is also recommended. The “l’aljub”, the public water system (cisterna), constructed under the British Governor of the island, Richard Kane, is still in operation today.
Gastronomy:
Es Mercadal is also famous for its gastronomy. Here you can taste typical Menorcan dishes in the many different restaurants in the village: oliaigo amb figues (a tomato soup), aberginies plenes (stuffed aubergine), carabassons plenes (stuffed marrow), calamars plenes (stuffed calamari) and also important to mention are the local pastries, amargos (almond cakes) carquinyolis (almond biscuits) - all homemade products from Es Mercadal.
