The 15.000 inhabitants of Ciutadella de Menorca are proud that their town was the island's capital from the Moorish epoch until 18th century. Aristocratical constructions as well as several palaces make evident its glorious past. The entire town was declared National Monument by the Spanish state.
Popular customs are highly interesting as well. Best known is the festival of San Juan, when el Jaleo takes place: a medieval equestrian performance with colorful old dresses.
Unlike Mahón Ciudadela is a typical Mediterranean town with colorful narrow lanes
General Information: At present Ciutadella of Menorca has a population of approximately 23,500 inhabitants, the majority of whom live in the extensions to the old nucleus and the rest in one of the many suburbs that surround our territory ( Calan Blanes, Cales Piques, Cala en Bosc, Santa Galdana....).
Even though the manufacture of shoes and costume jewellery continues being an important source of wealth for our town, today tourism has taken over as being the principal source of income for the majority of the population.
Where to go: The old town is surrounded by the "Contramurada", the street which runs around the town and where originally the walls of the olds city stood. It is a maze of narrow streets of Arabic and medieval origins. Within the old quartes of the town we find the most important monuments. The steet which runs between the "Plaza del Borne" and the "Plaza de Alfonso III", the old Mahón entrance, is the most pedestrian area of the city. Here we find the arcades, popularly called "Ses Voltes" which start at he Plaza de la Catedral and constitutes the comercial center of the old city.
The harbour of Ciutadella is long and narrow, although it has been widened. It has a length of 1km. with a maximum width of 500m. at its estuary and a minimumof 50m. at the rear. It is horn shaped and opens out to the southeast.
Gastronomy: Cuitadella has no shortage of good places to eat and drink, both down at the port and in town. Café Balear is a great choice at the harbour where its signature dish ‘onion lobster’ draws crowds until well after midnight. El Bribon, also on the harbourside, is well known for its friendly service and excellent seafood - a good place to start before heading for the Es Grop bar where you can relax surrounded by rooftop gardens and a cool atmosphere. Es Club is another recommended post-dinner bar venue.
