Calafell, with its three core areas, the old town which rose up around the high Medieval castle, the adjacent nucleus of Segur and Calafell Beach, is one of the 14 towns in the Baix Penedes, the northernmost county in the province of Tarragona.
A minute of History: The agricultural and maritime richness of Calafell has been taken advantage of for time immemorial. Here the Romans built a villa - Vilarenc - which contains two large water cisterns which are still very well preserved.
The Middle Ages saw the construction of the Calafell castle on a hill overlooking the present centre of town as well as the hermitage in Segur dedicated to St. Miquel.
The maritime character of Calafell has also been so crucial that, at the beginning of this century, fishers had a lifeboat wich is still sent to sea on certain occassions.
Location: Calafell is a well communicate coast village: 40 minutes from Barcelona and 20 minutes from Tarragona and Salou.
General Information: The superb geographical location of Calafell, with its excellent transport connections and its numerous social and cultural attractions, make Calafell an enchanting place all the year round.
Nature: Its boundaries include mountains, valleys, and...sea, the Mediterranean sea.Its climate is mild and temperate, with long hot summers and short pleasant winters.
Places to visit: Tourist facilities are concentrated above all in the old fishing neighbourhood, named La Platja or Marina de Calafell, which has restaurants, hotels, apartments and housing developments. Within the district of Calafell it is also worth visiting the Iberian village of Les Toixoneres (5th to 2nd centuries BC), which is currently known as the Iberian Citadel of Calafell and which has been rebuilt and the atmosphere reconstructed so that visitors can conjure up the civilization which inhabited the area 2,500 years ago.
Famous Monuments: From among Calafell's monumental heritage it is worth highlighting the medieval castle with its walled enclosure, the Romanesque church of Santa Creu, from the Lombardic age -11th century- and with remains of mural paintings in the apse.
