Widely acclaimed as one of the most picturesque areas of Mallorca, Cala d'Or is situated on the island's breathtakingly beautiful east coast shoreline. The resort is characterised by small sheltered coves and sandy beaches. A warm, friendly welcome awaits you in the resort's rich variety of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. At night the atmosphere is lively but relaxed.
Location: The resort of Cala d'Or lies on the southeast coast of Mallorca, approx 1.5 hours transfer from the airport.
General Information: Cala d'Or today is a modern purpose built resort, spread over approx 4 kilometres of small nearby sandy coves and creeks. It still retains the feeling of a small village and has only a few high rise buildings.
Where to go: Cala Gran, close to the centre of the resort, is the largest beach. Near here is Cala d'Or itself, a pine-fringed cove with a small but crowded beach. Sun-loungers, parasols and pedaloes can be hired at both of these beaches, and also at Cala Mondrago.
There are 9 other small sandy coves, which give the resort its name, which may become extremely crowded in high season. Most have a varied selection of water sports available at reasonable rates.
Resort Suitability: This resort is perfect for both families and younger people who want a relaxing holiday. To fully enjoy the sites around the island during your holiday we would advise hiring a car.
Entertainment: Daytime activities are centred around the beaches, in the water and under the sun. This area being more low-key the nightlife is limited, both in the centre and marina areas. Music bars and a handful of reasonable discotheques are offered. Kids can be entertained with trampolines and mini carts at Mallorcalandia. If you've hired a car and can venture out of the resort, the east coast does have a number of other attractions worth a visit.
Events: The Sunday morning market in the nearby town of Felanitx is one of the best in Majorca and well worth a visit. This is an excellent place to pick up a bargain, especially pottery.
Facts for Travellers: The tourist office is located on Avenida Cala Llonga, Santany. Tel/Fax: +34 971 657463.
Nightlife: Popular with both visitors and locals alike is the Chic Palace disco in Cala d'Or. It appeals mostly to people in their twenties, with chart and house music. The excellent sound system combined with a laser show and videos offers a memorable experience. La Cueva, is a tiny disco-pub set in cave-like surroundings, and it's the most happening venue in an otherwise sleepy Porto Petro. The Red Lion bar attracts people of all ages and shows live football matches, as well as playing a selection of popular music. You can find this bar off the main road, next to the Wimpy bar. The superb cocktails and a fantastic open-air dance floor at Mondbar in Cala Figuera make for a night to remember.
Gastronomy: Most of the good restaurants in Cala d'Or are found around the marina area.
A popular pizzeria and seafood restaurant is Blanco y Negro and specialises in stuffed squid.
Pizzas and pasta dishes are freshly made to order at Don Leone's Italian style grill with a shaded terrace.
The Dumpling is a family run restaurant in the centre of the resort. Specialities are home made beef and Guinness pie and a traditional Irish stew.
The mixed grill is recommended at El Lazo, a meat oriented Spanish restaurant. There's a big menu for kids and the prices are reasonable.
Comments: Cala D'Or also known as "Ses Puntetes" consists of many small coves..... Cala Llonga, Calo de ses Pones, Calo d'es Corrals and Calo Gran. The main pleasure port is Cala Llonga. The Club Nautico at Cala D'or is one of the best equipped clubs in the Balearics, and has become a showcase for luxury yachts.
