Atocha is located just south of the city centre, about 5 minutes from the famous Puerta del Sol and the popular Madrid museums, Reina Sofia, El Prado and Thyssen. It has the largest railway station in Madrid and is a busy, transport hub for commuters.

Getting Around:
The nearest metro station is Atocha on line A, and buses are frequent and reliable.

Attractions:
Estación de Atocha is a beautiful railway station made from mainly steel and glass designed by Basque architect, Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, who was also the brains behind the Palacio de Cristal in Retiro Park. With tropical plants, sculpture displays and in summer you can visit the terrace bar. The Reina Sofia Museum features many stunning 29th century works of art including Picasso, Dalí and Bacon. There is also a library, research centre, bookshop and restaurant. Admission is 3 euros, students with ID: 1.50. Under-18's and over-65's: free. Saturdays (14:30-21:00), Sundays (10:00 - 14:30), December 6, Oct 12, and May 18: free.

Events:
On the first Sunday in October every year, the statue of the Virgen de Atocha is paraded through the streets, accompanied by the statue of Santo Domingo de Guzmn. Its truly a great spectacle with hundreds of worshippers out on the streets. Held at the Atocha Basilica, Julián Gayarre, 1.

La Lupe is one of Atocha's most popular mixed bars with a unique decor and an ever-changing music selection. This is one of the Atocha area's most popular mixed bars. Young people of all types flock here nightly to enjoy La Lupe's relaxed atmosphere, unique decor, and ever-changing music selections. It's not uncommon to walk into this two-level bar and find a little live entertainment, such as cabaret or live music. The prices on alcohol and coffee here are hard to beat. METRO: Antón Martín. Kapital is like seven different parties at once! Something different happens on each of the seven floors where the dancing never stops...if you are feeling brave try some karaoke!

Gastronomy:
If you like quality wine and good service then La Platería is for you. It is a traditional wine bar that offers over 50 different varieties of fine wines and the barman will pour your choice into the best glassware. The tapas is tasty and reasonably priced. Located on Calle Moratín, 49. El Schotis is a busy bar situated near the entrance. The cream-colored, dimly lit dining area in the rear is a really cozy place to enjoy a good, traditional Spanish meal. Known primarily as a dinner destination, El Schotis is popular with the locals for its offerings of ham, tortillas, dessert melon, and cakes. Nearest metro station in La Latina.
