Arta is a medieval hilltop town dominated by the Santuari de Sant Salvador and is worth a visit during your stay in Mallorca.
A minute of History: Derived from the Arabic word jertan ('garden'), Arta has been occupied for at least 3,000 years, and this can be seen by the remains of a Bronze Age site at Ses Paisses just outside the town. Nowadays Arta is a prosperous small town near the coast, which gets particularly lively each Tuesday on market day.
General Information: Sant Salvador, a wonderful and mystic place for the people of Arta, is both centrally situated and historically was strategically located to defend the town.
Where to go: In Arta lie the remnants of an old settlement of Talayotic tribes which inhabited the island some 3,000-5,000 years ago in the Megalithic age. These well preserved stone constructions can be found just outside Arta in Ses Paises.
Events: Each January, Arta's big festival Sant Antoni de Junyis is celebrated with a masked procession and local pets are blessed. This event dates back to 1581 and features dancers.
Arta's small museum, housed inside Sa Nostra bank, has archaeological discoveries from Greek and Roman periods.
