Amsterdam is often referred to as one of the most colorful cities in the world. And rightly so! Where else do you find so many places of interest, famous museums, cozy pubs and fun shops and (flower) markets?

Where to go:
View Amsterdam from a different perspective. Discover unexpected and fun places of interest throughout this city. From the narrowest house in the world to mischievous cherubs on a pulpit.

Getting Around:
The local Transport is excellent, however, the bicycle is part of everyday life in Amsterdam. It is used for everything from commuting to work to running errands. It is also an excellent means for exploring the city! The city of Amsterdam is hard at work to make its bicycle routes as safe as possible, so that you may explore the city by bike safely and easily.

Entertainment:
The attitude of the Dutch as a whole is one of 'live and let live' and they are well known for their unique language and enthusiasm. Amsterdam is infamous for its relaxed policy for sex and soft drugs. Although somewhat open, the drugs problem in Amsterdam is less of that in any comparable city. As with London and Paris, Amsterdam has a 'red-light district' which bustles with crowds until the early hours. This area is now somewhat of a tourist attraction and for the interested there is one company runs a fully guided tour of the district. This area in and around the red-light district is well policed and safe.

Attractions:
The Van Gogh Museum has more than two hundred paintings by Vincent van Gogh on display. Some of the works of art are especially familiar from cookie tins and popular posters, like “The Bedroom”, “Self-Portrait as a Painter” and “Still Life with Sunflowers”. You can see all of the originals at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

Events:
Amsterdam Arts Adventure is a selection of the many special events and festivals taking place in the Dutch capital this summer. In fact, there are so many that Amsterdam can truly be called Europe’s city of festivals. June, July and August are packed with great performances and concerts featuring top artists from around the world.

Sports:
You can visit the original, one-and-only Ajax Museum in the entrance building of the impressive Amsterdam Arena soccer stadium. Here you can see how a boy’s dream came true. Ajax, Amsterdam’s well-known soccer team, was formed at the end of the 20th century by a group of boys from Amsterdam. Now that the players have become world-famous heroes, it is hard to imagine that the team had such humble beginnings.

Places to visit:
Did you know that Amsterdam has 42 museums, 141 galleries, 22 paintings from Rembrandt, 206 paintings from Van Gogh and much more? As well as the famous museums such as the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum, you will also find less known museums in Amsterdam such as the Bible Museum.

Alternative Activities:
See Amsterdam from your ‘own’ pedal boat! You’ll have a totally different view of the city from the water. Experience how creepy and dark it is under some bridges. This is where pigeons often build their nests. There are pedal boats available for two and for four persons.

Nightlife:
Amsterdam is one of the entertainment capitals of Europe. It offers nightlife a plenty, from bars with life music to stylish casino's, from trendy nightspots to dynamic disco's, from theatre productions to eye-opening entertainment in the red-light district. Most of the cafés, restaurants, nightclubs and discotheques are located around the Leidseplein and the Rembrandtplein areas, and are still lively around the early hours of the morning.

Gastronomy:
BREAKFAST: Start your day with a wholesome Dutch breakfast: fresh bread with butter, jam, cheese, ham or chocolate sprinkles (hagelslag). Yes, you’ve read it correctly: Scatter chocolate sprinkles on your buttered bread. You might also want to eat a slice of Breakfast cake (ontbijtkoek), a cake containing cinnamon and cloves as well as ground ginger. LUNCH: is another bread and butter meal, the same as breakfast, perhaps served with thinly sliced cold meats. More coffee, tea, milk or buttermilk. An ‘uitsmijter’ will satisfy your hunger pangs. It consists of bread with slices of cheese or meat, topped with fried eggs. In winter a simple order of Dutch pea soup (erwtensoep) will satisfy your hunger and re-charge your batteries. Look for these specialities on the menu. Come DINNERTIME, the choice of food in Holland is as varied as the weather. Restaurants representing Holland’s multicultural backgrounds have mushroomed all over, ranging from French to Indonesian to Thai to Pakistani. However, in Dutch homes old traditions die hard and the simple, substantial meals of potatoes, fresh vegetables, meat, chicken, fish or salad, followed by a milk-based dessert, are still favorite.
