Altea is the culture capital of the Costa Blanca and, along with the myriad of bars, restaurants, shops and galleries in the maze of cobbled streets, hosts a night-time arts and crafts market during the summer months. The historic whitewashed old town sits atop a hill and is dominated by the domed church which is a prominent landmark for many miles around. For those looking for more hectic nightlife, the bright lights of Benidorm are only 12 minutes in a car. Much of the Costa Blanca coast is served by the cheap and regular narrow gauge trains en route to either the port of Denia in the north or the port of Alicante in the south. The Terra Mítica theme park is also served by the train and great for kids of all generations.
Getting Around: Altea provides an important transport hub for the Marina Alta as it links Pego with the Marina Baixa and the Retoría Valleys with the Vall de Laguart.
Beaches: Altea stretches out from Mascarat point in a wide bay, a succession of tiny coves and beaches as far as the port's breakwater that marks the edge of Alfàs del Pi, whose beach completes the bay at the foot of Bombarda point. The first beach - pebbles and clear waters - lies next to Greenwich marina with an appealing range of sports activities at the diving centre, sailing school and boat charter. Similar facilities are also available in the port and the yacht club. Moving along the coast is a gravel beach and nudist cove followed by the most popular beaches - Olla, with sand, pebbles and rocks, and Cap Negret, gravel - both with full services.
Art and Culture: Altea also possesses a magnificent auditorium where it is possible to attend a variety of programmed musical and scenic representations. It is also home to the Campus of the Arts of the Miguel Hernández University. The University of Fine arts and the University of Dance are located in the municipality. Future plans aim to install Universities in the History of the Art, Sciences, Cinematography, Dramatic Arts and the History of Music.
Nature: High in the mountains behind Altea, you will find Algar Falls, which are beautiful waterfalls and springs that cascade into fabulous natural pools where you can enjoy a dip in a beautiful tropical paradise. The area is a protected nature site where natural spices and medicinal herbs are grown.
Worth a visit....: The old part of Altea well deserves a visit, which must be initiated with the idea of “getting lost” among the labyrinth of paved and staggered streets, which allow to visitors to discover the many interesting retreats of the town. Leaving the town centre, there are many different places of interest such as the Forat, the Font del Garrofert or the Font del Runar. 10 kilometres away is the harassed centre of Benidorm or there are 9 kilometres to the beautiful surroundings of Calpe and the Peñón de Ifach.
Gastronomy: The sea and the agricultural products play lead in the Altea gastronomy, with a rich and wide variety of dishes. From among the typical specialities, snails with onions stand out, along with “cruet de peix”, sea urchins and, of course, rice dishes such as "arroz a banda" or the "empedrat". From among the baked specialities the "coca a la lluma" and the "coca farcida" stand out.
