For a peaceful and relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings, this relatively new resort is an ideal choice. What started as a quieter overflow of lively Alcudia is now well established as a resort in its own right, suitable for couples and families alike. Its prime location on the eastern end of Alcudia’s famous 11 kilometre beach is perfect for a beach holiday. The resort is named after the nearby village of Muro.
Location: 60 kilometres from Son Sant Joan airport and nestled between Playa de Alcudia and Playa Picafort, is where you will find Playa de Muro.
General Information: One of the oldest towns in Mallorca, you can still see some remains of its Roman walls. Surrounded by palm trees, the huge 16th century church of San Juan Baptista has an Arabic flavour, because of its square bell tower (it used to be a watchtower), from where you can still enjoy fabulous views from the top.
Where to go: Visit the town of Muro for a stroll through its old streets, past beautiful buildings that will give you a feel for its impressive history. On Sunday mornings, you can visit the fruit and veg market for a taste of local life.
There are some lovely walks in the Parc Naturel de S'Albufera, with its marshes and wildlife. The nearby village of Sa Pobla will really give you a feel for old Mallorca, and a taste of it too; if you can cope with the village's spicy cuisine. But there’s also a modern touch, with contemporary art on display at the C'an Planes cultural centre.
Beaches: Life revolves around the beach in Playa de Muro– and you can see why. The long stretch of powdery white sand, lined with pine trees where you can picnic in the shade, has all the facilities you could wish for. The beach offers 8 kilometres of fine, clean golden sand and is popular with families.
Attractions: For a fascinating insight into Mallorcan folklore and life of years gone by, don't miss the Museu Etnologic de Mallorca. There's even a display of blacksmith's and cobbler's workshops. It is housed in an old mansion, La Casa Alomar in Calle Mayor, and has a lovely quaint courtyard and orange trees. It's generally open from Tuesdays to Sundays, from 10:00 to 14:00 and again from 16:00 to 19.00, but is closed in August.
